Saving the Rabbits of Ravensbrück A Project of Documentaries

It was February 5, 1945, in Ravensbrück, the largest women's only concentration camp in the Third Reich. The inmates - Catholic, Protestant, and Jewish women from over 20 different nations – were starving, sick, and struggling to survive in the camp known as "Hitler's Hell for Women." Yet this diverse group still found a way to unite and save 63 Polish Catholic women, many of whom were just high school and college students, who had been horribly maimed by Nazi experimental surgeries on their legs and slated for execution. Not only did this international group of female prisoners pull off one of the most amazing concentration camp rescues of the war, but ensured that the courageous young Polish women, nicknamed the "Rabbits," survived to testify at the Nuremberg Trials against their Nazi doctors. Saving the Rabbits of Ravensbrück tells the story of how women survive and resist - and this is our last chance to hear how they did it, in their own words, before the last of these heroes is lost to time.

The Team

I've been incredibly fortunate to have Martha Hall Kelly, author of the instant New York Times best seller Lilac Girls, as part of our team. I also have an incredibly skilled and talented production and visual team, who have decades of domestic and international experience in film and television. In terms of my own background, I've produced and directed commercials, my own feature film, and most recently, an Emmy-award winning program currently airing nationally on PBS. This is a team of talented professionals - who believe passionately in the mission of this film.

What We Need & What You Get

We traveled to Ravensbrück for the 70th anniversary of the liberation of the camp and were able to interview two of the remaining three "Rabbits," but need your help to travel to Europe this Spring/Summer to interview the other "Rabbit," as well as the survivors who were part of the secret network in the camp that helped organize their rescue. In Poland, I will be interviewing Polish national heroine and "Rabbit" Wanda Półtawska and other Ravensbrück survivors, including follow-up interviews with the other "Rabbits" we spoke to in Germany. We'll also travel to Paris to interview Anise Postel-Vinay, one of the women of the French resistance who not only helped the "Rabbits" in the camp, but after the war. We will also travel to London to interview world-renowned subject matter experts, including Nikolaus Wachsmann, author of the critically acclaimed KL: A History of the Nazi Concentration Camps and award-winning writer Sarah Helm, author of Ravensbrück: Life and Death in Hitler's Concentration Camp for Women.

We need to raise $100,000 to cover the cost of the crew, the film equipment, as well as travel and lodging for the trip. The cost to film is about $10,000 per day. If we are unable to hit our goal, we will reduce our number of shooting days. If we are able to raise more money than our goal, we will be able to talk to more survivors while we are there. We are offering some wonderful perks, including a free download of the finished film or DVD, signed copies of the instant NYT best seller Lilac Girls, and even access to footage and photographs that may not be in the final film.
