THE BIG RIDE 2017 A Project of Documentaries
We all enjoy the occasional "summer blockbuster" or the latest installment of our favorite franchise film. But for projects that challenge us to be better people, to learn, grow and stay informed and inspired we have documentaries. Unfortunately big studios and production houses with their primary focus of making money will seldom if ever fund the type of film I'm talking about. Even smaller is the chance of getting funded without a "name" director or actor's participation. So, we who wish to make big, bold, ambitious films must rely on the generous support of those who love the arts and specifically film!
THE BIG RIDE 2017 is a documentary about a group of friends, shipmates and fellow veterans riding motorcycles to the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in South Dakota. Some of the themes that I will explore in the film include;
1. What is the meaning of freedom?
2. What are the effects of a cross country motorcycle trip on those of us "of a certain age" and what are the challenges faced by female riders in what is traditionally considered a male past time.
3. Finding the "lost America" of years ago. The America of Steinbeck's "Travels With Charlie", "Route 66" and "Easy Rider" and outside of the coasts, the big cities and within 4 miles of our interstate highways.
4. For good or ill, the "corporatization" of our American institutions specifically the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally.
This project will also be a unique, one of a kind multimedia experience with daily "live" updates on THE BIG RIDE 2017 Facebook page. These updates will come from various locations along the route both scenic and mundane to allow the supporters of the project to share in our experience and keep abreast of developments in the shooting of the film. Come along for the ride!
