Out of Sight: French Premiere Fundraiser A Project of Documentaries
Partner with us to make our French premiere possible
Through a series of interviews with adult survivors, adolescents, educators, parents, and mental health professionals, this project seeks to probe deeply into why depression and self harm are so frequently swept under the rug. Out of Sight is a feature-length documentary that has been in production for the past three years, spearheaded by a team of passionate students and advocates. It explores the ongoing conflicts found within families surrounding those with mental health disorders. We examine the cultural reaction surrounding the recognition of mental illness in young adults, and the dangerous but common consequences of denial. Out of Sight has been honored with a nomination for Best Documentary by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration's Voice Awards in 2016, and winning Best Feature Film at the 2016 Southside Film Festival. The film will be available streaming from Amazon Video on September 10th in select countries.
The Current Situation
We have been accepted to the prestigious Nice International Filmmaker Festival of World Cinema in France. This will serve as our French premiere of this film, as well as an opportunity to market the film to more international distribution opportunities at the nearby Marché du Film occurring at the Canne Film Festival during the same week. The film is also in consideration for both Best Documentary Feature and Best Documentary Director in Nice. It is very important that we have representation at the festival to make it a success, but we did not expect this opportunity to arise and need you to help make it possible with your tax-deductible contribution.
Every contribution of $25 or more will earn early streaming access to the film, and everyone who gives at least $50 will receive a special edition early DVD release this summer.
Some of these release expenses include:
- Travel expenses
- Promotion and publicity materials
- Food and accommodations
- Entrance fees for film markets
Our goal is to reach out and start a conversation. Mental health is a topic that we often push aside, and we want to share people's personal experiences of coping with their depression. A contribution of a few dollars or even sharing our website would help this message spread:
Everybody knows somebody who has been affected by depression, suicide, or other mental health crisis. Depression touches 1 in 5 teenagers, and only a third receive appropriate care. We hope that in the future, more open and safe spaces for adolescents to discuss mental health issues will lead to greater rates of treatment. Our team's passion is to raise awareness that enables both adult and teen advocates to speak up in their communities and create safe spaces.
If we do not receive sufficient funding, or health or personal circumstances prevent us from attending in the scale expected, we will update our donors on the modified outreach planned for Nice. Our web and DVD release are already appropriately funded and the success of this fundraiser has no impact on that availability.
Other Ways You Can Help
Even if you aren't able to contribute financially, you can still support our project by sharing it with your friends, and being an advocate for positive mental health conversations in your community:
- Share our fundraising campaign across social media and with your friends.
- Share our website, social media pages, and promotional video with your online community.
- Spark a conversation about mental health stigma with the young people in your life.
Thank you so much for taking the time to consider our project. We are so excited to share the film with you in the future.
All contributions are tax-deductible through our fiscal-sponsor From the Heart Productions.
